Choosing a preschool for your child is a big decision. One that can cause a lot of anxiety. For some of us, it’s our first time leaving our child with someone, outside of our family or friends. This in itself can cause heart palpitations. Not to mention the reactions that our tiny humans can have when we do this. We all know the massive amount of tears and feelings of guilt. However, when you are confident in your child care provider, it can make it a lot easier.

It’s hard to know where to start when choosing a preschool or child care provider. But, here’s some tips to help you along the way!

Location, Hours, Tuition, Class Size, Student/Teacher Ratio

It’s important to consider where the provider is located. It doesn’t necessarily have to be five minutes from your house, you could also consider preschools that are on your way to work or close to your work. You’ll want to make sure that their hours of operation coincide with your schedule. Some providers have extended days/hours to accommodate different schedules. You’ll also want to be sure to factor in the cost of the school. Many schools have different payment options including monthly installments or even lump sum tuition discounts if you pay upfront. Class size and the student/teacher ratio are all valid questions to ask when interviewing your potential provider.

Education Style and Philosophy

Ask about the education style of your potential provider. Make sure it aligns with what is best for your child and their personality. You know your child best so you’ll want to make sure that the environment matching their learning style. Some programs offer a combination of play and instruction, others are strictly play based. What are you wanting your child gets out of the preschool experience? Is it more for socialization with other kids? Learning to adapt to a more structured routine? Learning skills like ABCs and 1,2,3s?

Look on the school’s website. Read about their philosophy, style and curriculum. It may help to answer questions that you have and help you to narrow down your choices before having to visit many in person.

Look for Reviews and Personal Recommendations

Family and friends  can provide valuable insight into a preschool’s general reputation in your area. If there’s a provider that you’re really interested in,  you can seek out feedback from parents with children currently enrolled in the program. These parents and children have been in your shoes before so ask them for their honest opinion and they’ll be likely to share it.

Schedule a Tour

The most important tip for choosing a preschool is to schedule a tour. Nothing can match going into the environment and getting a feel for the setting. It may provoke questions that you hadn’t thought of at all.
