Get UP and Get MOVING

Get up &The last thing on a mom’s mind is exercise! With our never-ending list as mothers, we barely have time to sit down, let alone take a shower, so working out is not on our priority list. Exercise was never on my “to-do” list until I actually needed it!

I grew up very active, involved in cheerleading, gymnastics, and track. Once I was out of college I never “purposefully worked out”.  It wasn’t until after I had my 3rd child that exercise became a necessity for my health.  You could say that I have always been a “high stress” type of person, Type-A personality, controlling, and a busy bee. I really didn’t see the need to work out plus I thought I was in good shape (we all think that, right?). But after I had my 3rd child I dealt with severe anxiety and debilitating panic attacks. This was all new to me and I felt a complete loss of control over my body. My body was consumed with tension. A colleague of mine said, “You need to go run, swim, and let some steam off!” And I thought to myself, how in the world do I have time to workout when I have 3 kids under 5, one being 6 weeks old, breastfeeding, walking zombie from no sleep, and a husband that travels…but I listened to him.  I knew I needed to make a change and that day I started swimming in my neighbor’s pool or just running in my neighborhood for 20 minutes. Within a week I could feel a difference. I felt lighter and the tension begin to leave my body.  Eventually days passed, and then weeks, and I began to develop the habit of working out on a daily basis, and I actually loved it.

We love our kids, but they naturally cause stress in our bodies, and if we do not release it, we will combust! I know that all of us moms can raise our hand right now and say that we have lashed out at our kids when we shouldn’t have due to stress, I know I have. The point is you have to GET UP & GET MOVING. Exercise is one of the best ways to decrease overall stress and a less stressed mom equals happy kids, happy home. Your mood sets the foundation of your home.  And don’t you want a peaceful home?

It has now been 3 years in June that I started exercising and I enjoy it even more now than ever. It has ultimately led me to my mission to help other women find their balance in getting healthy from the inside-out. I am not saying it has been easy and I have had to push myself to workout, but the benefits are so worth it! Introducing exercise into my life has radically changed my life. I am truly a better woman, wife, mom, daughter, and friend because of it. It gives me mental clarity, helps balance out my emotions, connects me spiritually with my surroundings, and helps me stay physical healthy.

I want to encourage you incredible moms to GET UP & GET MOVING. It is so important to make time for yourself so that you do not get burnt out, and exercising can do just that for you!  I know that not only will it make you a better mom, but it will help you live a longer healthier happier life for your kids and help alleviate that stress you are carrying around in your body!

Here are a few tips on how to get moving:

  1. Make An Obtainable Goal & Plan – If you are not working out already, try to workout once a week, then move up to twice a week. All you need is 30 minutes of exercise a day to reap the benefits. Ideally, you want to be able to exercise 30 minutes, 3-4 days a week for maximum benefits. Along with making a goal, you need to make a plan to reach that goal. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a career mom you have to schedule in your workout. Sit down Sunday evening, look at your week and schedule in your workouts. You wouldn’t cancel your doctor’s appointment, so don’t cancel your workout. Make a plan and stick to it!
  2. Find a Friend – Accountability is the missing link to reaching your health and fitness goals. Find another mom, a family member or friend to keep you accountable in working out. You could even join a fitness class or health and fitness group for support. I participate in group workouts at my local Crossfit three times a week along with at-home workouts and then I am a part of a women’s health & fitness challenge group to keep me accountable to my goals. Having a partner makes it more enjoyable because not only are you alleviating mommy stress, but you also get to have an adult conversation. They are so many mom’s exercise clubs that you could join to get you moving plus the opportunity to make new friends.
  3. If you can’t go to a fitness class or a women’s exercise group, do something at home. There are so many incredible workout programs that you can do at home, so you really have no excuse not to get moving. If your kids nap, you can plug in a workout DVD for 30 minutes and get it done. Even if they do not nap, set them up with movie and popcorn and get it done!
  4. Believe in yourself, because you can do it!  As Mom’s we often fail to take care of ourselves for the sake of others. But I promise you, it is worth making this time for yourself. All you need is 30 minutes a day to be a happier, healthier mom. It will forever change you like it has for me.

Remember it is all about finding YOUR balance in life and figuring how you can get moving in your schedule as a mom.
