School is back in session, in fact it has been for a few weeks now. Is your fitness routine back in session? I had all sorts of promises and dreams for the summer. Oh, don’t be sad for me, I had a great summer – we went on vacation, played with family and friends – it was fabulous! But, my fitness goals just didn’t happen. Between the kids being home, schedules being all over the place, my running shoes rarely saw the bottom of the pavement.
Please tell me I’m not the only one!
Well, now that the kids are back in school, I am dedicated to getting back into my fitness routine. Back into giving myself that hour a day. Back to feeling better about ME. We deserve an hour 3-5 days a week, don’t we?
Here are a few tips that will hopefully help you stay on track with your fitness goals, or help you get back on track:
Set REALISTIC Goals
Realistic is the key word here, if you make your goals too hard, you won’t do them. Plan and simple. If you don’t start, you can never finish. You know YOU better than anyone, set goals that you know you can do. Goals are made to be met!
Start Off Slow
If you haven’t worked out all summer either, be sure to start yourself back into your routine slowly. Don’t give yourself the goal to run 5 miles a day 7 days a week when you been having fun in the sun the last 3 months. When you fail at your goals, you have the tendency to give up. And we don’t want to give up. We WON’T give up!
Make Exercise Part of Your Routine
Make sure you are exercising regularly – when you exercise, you are burning those calories! Going for a casual walk after work with friends is better than sitting on the couch and watching TV, but I recommend getting that heart pumping! You don’t have to go buy a fancy gym membership to be able to exercise, there are plenty of things you can do at home. Think yoga, weights, DVDs, etc.
Try Something New
Are you a runner? Try a group class! Check out those daily deal sites and get discounted 5 classes somewhere new – even better – go with a friend! It doesn’t matter what workout routine you try, as long as you TRY it. I enjoy going to Jazzercise 2xs a week because my routine is different every time and then I like to run my other days.
Plan an Event
Give yourself something to work towards. We are coming into the cooler months here in Florida, so pick a run and sign up! It doesn’t matter the distance – 5k, 10k, Half Marathon etc. When you are training for something (an specific date) it will help you stay on track. I am a Best Damn Race Ambassador and an signed up for the Half Marathon in Safety Harbor in February – come on and join me! In fact, you can use coupon code HAVEFUN to save $5 off any Best Damn Race.
Try New Foods
While you are trying new things with your exercise routine, consider trying new foods too. May I suggest smoothies, quinoa, lentils, more veggies! We always tell our kids to try new things, be sure you are following your own advice. Just take little steps.
Most Importantly, Show Self-Love
YOU are your hardest critic. YOU are the hardest on yourself. So, I challenge you to be proud of yourself. Give yourself a virtual HIGH-FIVE when you walk past those cookies at the grocery store. Smile bigger when you ran an extra 1/4 mile. Go ahead and brag to a friend that you tried a fun new recipe. Be proud of YOU on your journey!
How do you stay on track with your fitness goals? Did you find it hard to start back up when the kids went back to school?
