As moms it’s only natural for us to put the needs of our children, our spouse, our pets, our jobs, E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. before the needs of ourselves.
I’m here to tell you that it’s OKAY to take time for yourself. You need it. You deserve it. It will make you a better parent, a better wife. Trust me.
Perhaps you don’t need to do what I did and lose a bunch of weight and basically change your entire life and that of your family. Perhaps your “me time” is a bubble bath, a glass of wine, and a good book. Whatever it is, find it, embrace it, and enjoy it. And whatever you do, DON’T feel guilty about it.
If taking time for you is something that is new to your family dynamic, you might want to have a sit-down conversation with your significant other and tell them what you are going to need. They aren’t mind readers, but I guarantee that they want to see you happy. They know that THEIR happiness rests on YOUR happiness. And if they don’t know that, they should by the end of your conversation.
Having children and a spouse/significant other doesn’t mean that you should have to give up on any of your own dreams. You just need to figure out a way to make it all work. And if you want it bad enough, you can make it happen.
I take time for myself every day; 90 minutes of exercise every.single.day. There are times when my husband can’t be home to help me with the children, so I bring them to CrossFit En Fuego with me (where they participate in CrossFit Kids) or we go on a family run or bike ride. Taking time for me doesn’t mean that it has to be alone time! Or if mom duty really calls and I have a child that needs to stay home from school because of illness, I pop in an exercise DVD (Les Mills Body Pump) for 60 minutes and then do quick 25 minute circuit routine that I developed. And my kids watch me. They love to watch me. They cheer me on, they sing the songs along with the DVD. It’s became a way of life for us. I’m a better wife and mom because I take care of me.
